Signs of Spring

Mother Nature might have finally looked at the calendar and decided to let Spring weather come to New England. I’ve put together a few tips for Spring lawn care.

1. I have seen forsythia blooming which indicates that the soil temperature is warm enough for crab grass to germinate. If you don’t have plans to spot or over-seed now is a good time to apply pre emergent herbicide for weed control in your lawn.

1. I have seen forsythia blooming which indicates that the soil temperature is warm enough for crab grass to germinate. If you don’t have plans to spot or over-seed now is a good time to apply pre emergent herbicide for weed control in your lawn.

2. I think that you should be able to pull up your snow stakes and service the snow blower before storing it away for a few months. I will admit that I am superstitious so the snow stakes stay out through the first home stand at my house.

3. Clean all the leaves and branches that came down over Winter, or in my case that the dogs drug out of the woods, out of the yard.

4. Spot seed any thin or worn areas in your lawn. Check that the snow plows didn’t peel up areas along the street and driveway. You may need some soil to fill in ruts and diverts before over-seeding with quality seed.

5. Do maintenance on your mower and other lawn equipment. Check oil levels, air filters, safety features to make sure they are in good running order. Sharpen your mower blade. A dull blade tears the grass blades, opening it up to disease and can cause browning of the tips.
